Zequanox CS Container Label
Abstract
Zequanox CS is a biological molluscicide targeting invasive zebra and quagga mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena bugensis) in enclosed or semi-enclosed water systems. Its active ingredient comprises killed cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain CL145A and spent fermentation media, accounting for 50% of the product.
Mode of Action
Mussels ingest Zequanox CS while filtering water, mistaking it for food. Upon digestion, the active ingredient disrupts the epithelial cells lining their digestive system, leading to mortality. Visible effects occur within a few days, with full effectiveness observed between 3 to 21 days post-application. Efficacy depends on mussel feeding activity and metabolism, influenced by factors like water temperature and breeding cycles.
Use Restrictions
Zequanox CS should not be mixed with chlorinated water. When combining with other products, adhere to the most restrictive labeling limitations and precautions. A compatibility "jar test" is recommended before mixing. The product must be applied within one hour of wetting and should not be reapplied more frequently than once every two weeks.
Application Instructions
Zequanox CS is suitable for enclosed or semi-enclosed systems with defined inlets and/or outlets, such as cooling water systems, raw water intake structures, pumping systems, and water storage facilities. For static (quiescent) water bodies infested with zebra and/or quagga mussels, Zequanox CS can be applied to the surface or injected below the water surface. Treatments should not exceed 50% of the total volume of the water body per application.
Treatment Types
Adult Treatment: Targets established adult mussel populations. Apply at a concentration not exceeding 0.013 oz of active ingredient per gallon of water (100 mg/L) for up to 8 hours within a 24-hour period. Limit to four treatments per calendar year, with at least one month between treatments.
Juvenile Treatment: Focuses on managing sub-adult mussels (<0.2 inches or 4 mm). Apply at a concentration not exceeding 0.0067 oz of active ingredient per gallon of water (50 mg/L) for up to 8 hours. Do not reapply more frequently than every two weeks.
Veliger Treatment: Aims at controlling mussel larvae. Apply at the same concentration as juvenile treatments (50 mg/L) for up to 8 hours, with a minimum two-week interval between applications.
Safety and Environmental Precautions
Zequanox CS can be toxic to both fish and bivalve larvae/juveniles; therefore, applications should avoid critical breeding seasons. Consult local state fish and game agencies before applying this product to public waters, as permits may be required. Do not discharge effluent containing this product into water bodies unless in accordance with the requirements of a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, and notify the permitting authority in writing prior to discharge or application.
First Aid Measures
In case of ingestion, skin contact, or eye exposure, follow standard first aid procedures and seek medical attention if necessary. For emergencies, contact 1-800-222-1222 for medical treatment information.
