Invasive Carp Action Plan (FY 2022)
Abstract
Publication: Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee
The Invasive Carp Action Plan for Fiscal Year 2022, developed by the Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ICRCC), outlines a coordinated strategy to prevent the spread of invasive carp into the Great Lakes. This annual, science-based plan brings together 28 U.S. and Canadian federal, state, provincial, tribal, and local partners in a unified effort to combat four invasive species: Silver, Bighead, Grass, and Black Carp.
With over $260 million in combined agency and GLRI funding, the plan focuses on six key areas: preventing carp migration through critical pathways, enhancing early detection and monitoring, developing and refining deterrent technologies, supporting fish removal programs, and improving cross-border communication and coordination. High-priority projects target hotspots like the Illinois Waterway and western Lake Erie basin, while new innovations like carbon dioxide deterrents and acoustic barriers are tested.
By uniting resources and expertise across jurisdictions, the FY22 Action Plan strengthens efforts to contain invasive carp, protect native aquatic species, and preserve the ecological and economic health of the Great Lakes for future generations.
