Biological progress or bathtub brews? The state of US crop biologicals in 2024

Abstract

Publication: AgFunderNews

Despite skepticism, biologicals—crop protection products derived from microbes, peptides, and plants—are gaining traction in agriculture. They promise to reduce chemical inputs, lower costs, and combat herbicide-resistant weeds, yet challenges remain. CropLife’s 2024 Biologicals Survey found that lack of trust in product performance is the top barrier to adoption, followed by cost.

The biologicals sector is diverse, including biocontrols (biopesticides, bioherbicides, biofungicides) and biostimulants (biofertilizers, microbial inoculants, plant-growth regulators). While biostimulants are the most widely used, biopesticides are seeing increased adoption.

Major agrochemical companies like Bayer, Corteva, Syngenta, and BASF are investing heavily in biologicals, alongside startups like Pivot Bio, New Leaf Symbiotics, and AgroSpheres. Though the industry still faces regulatory hurdles and market skepticism, advancements in AI, microbial discovery, and formulation technologies could accelerate adoption. Education and proof of efficacy will be key to overcoming resistance and integrating biologicals into mainstream agriculture.
